Goodbye off the rack hello Made to Measure

Today’s issue of WWD had a headline inside that read “From Savile Row to Main Street: Custom Suits Go Mass” I saw this coming a mile away. That is essentially a part of our business model here at Surajo Bello. We seek to offer made to measure, custom-made, and made to order products to the masses and not just the super elite. This is a newly developed market in my opinion because of the advancement in technologies and speed of production. If a customer had a choice of having a suit specifically made for him at $695 it would be pointless to buy and off the rack suit at $695, unless he needed it right then or their. So the male consumer is embracing this idea which has allowed for the development of a few new companies that specialized in delivering made-to-measure products in a timely fashion and at an affordable rate. Satoriani offers made to measure suit starting @ $995 which is more affordable then the super high end luxury brands mentioned in one of my previous articles.

This new market is a both a product of the economic conditions and advancement in technology. With declining off the rack sales and increasing made-to-measure sales it would be wise to think that the way men shop will be drastically changing in the future. I’m thinking less emphasis and production of ready-to-wear (off the rack) and more focus on customized goods and services. Another brand Josephs Custom Clothiers is about to open its first Manhattan store which will retail custom suits made in New York between $2,200 and $3,500. Mega brand Ralph Lauren has also expanded his custom made service, now offering fully hand made suits under his Purple label starting at $10,000. This is obviously a product only for the corporate tycoons and aristocrats of the world but our suits open at $1,100 for a super 120’s wool and cap off at $9,790 for a super 200 wool silk blend custom made suit.

We offer a personalized luxury service for every man and the final price of his product is controlled solely by his taste and fabric desire. Our suits are made in New York by our team of 9 skilled tailors and we limit seasonal production of suits to 45 per geographic region, which allows us to pay a great deal of attention to detail and quality. So I guess all the mega luxury brands who aren’t offering such services and products should modify their business strategy because how can you tell a customer “you can’t get that personalized” and claim to be a luxury brand when everyone knows true luxury is personalized.

LVMH wants to be normal!

So in case you did not know, LVMH (Moët Hennessy - Louis Vuitton) shut down their e-commerce website eluxury.com last year. So if you’re thinking like me, you’re probably assuming they were creating an even better more efficient and user friendly e-commerce site to deliver high-end luxury products to the consumer. But they did the total opposite, which shocked me. They created www.nowness.com which is the replacement for eluxury. Nowness.com is a luxury brands first attempt to be normal, and not commercial. It’s taking the luxury brand and truly making it an entity of its own. Nowness.com goal is to bring art, culture, fashion, or travel to the public, and not in hopes of making money, but instead to show the public the different things that inspire fashion and the creative process. LVMH basically wants to be normal and show the consumer that it’s not all about making money; it’s about creativity, inspiring creativity and offering valued content. I think this is a wonderful move by the brand and hopefully more brands follow. I personally set up a tumblr account Surajo Bello to show case my artistic vision and things that inspire me and my brand. It’s going to be a work in process since I’m inspired everyday.

Hermes does men’s deluxe!

I think it’s pretty awesome Herems, one of the most luxurious brands today, has finally decided to open up a men's only boutique on Madison ave parallel to their flagship store. I think it was a wise move as now they can directly compete with Tom Ford, Kiton, and Brioni since they all cater to the super rich. Hermes made-to-measure shirt starts at around $850, while a made-to-measure suit starts at $6,000. A bespoke suit starts at $9,000. All the fittings are done here in New York but the sewing is done in Paris. They are definitely increasing their product offerings, compared to what is currently offered at the flagship. At the new menswear boutique they will be offering the option of custom jackets in exotic skins. The opening range for a custom made jacket is $50,000. Wow! That’s got to be some hell of luxurious fabric. I mean our menswear suit’s hit a ceiling of $9,035 for a super 200 cashmere/wool three piece suit, which is pretty luxurious, but $50,000 for a Jacket? I’d love to have that luxurious jacket on my back. Robert B Chavez if you’re reading this I wouldn’t mind modeling one of those jackets for you.

How Fendi Celebrated the Opening of their Crystals @ MGM store in Vegas

So how does one create a bag that screams excess? First you make it in python leather, and then you dip the python leather in 24kt Gold. Tada! The 24kt gold Trevi Fountain Peekaboo bag is born and to acquire it, just fork over $36,000. Yes, $36,000. But if you want to be subtly excessive just purchase the same bag minus the 24kt Gold bath for a nice $4,550. If you want it just head over to Crystals at MGM's CityCenter in Las Vegas, NV. Happy Shopping.

Made to Order Mercedes Benz

Here is another luxury brand; I believe is doing something outstanding. Mercedes Benz is offering made to order versions of their E-Class which will include saloon, Estate wagon, coupe and Cabrio convertible. So what exactly will you be able to customize? I thought you’d never ask. Here’s what you’ll get to tweak aprons front and rear, side skirts, spoilers for the front, the rear and the trailing edge of the roof, as well as new wheel options. You will also be able to upgrade the suspension, brakes and interior. Wooooo whooooo. It is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show this March.

Valentine’s Day for the Distinctive

Guest writer Charlene V. Drayton

Soon comes the time for the reds, pinks, hearts and roses. The time of year that separates the boys from the men. The loved from the lonely. The Casanovas from the lames. That’s right gentlemen, soon will be Valentine’s Day, and your hot mama is enthusiastically waiting for a Valentine’s Day beyond the cliché. I am here to help guide you to making your Valentine’s Day special for not the average woman, but for the exceptional woman.

Yes you can take your lady out to a fine restaurant and let the chefs do all the work, but how about you step outside of your element and whip something up yourself? Get dressed up in your finest suit while your woman puts on her special black dress drenched in her diamonds or pearls. Now prepare for a romantic night in. But don’t get me wrong, making spaghetti with meatballs is not for the exceptional woman, yet what you can do to arouse and impress her is to look up a recipe from an exotic country that neither of you have ever visited. Perhaps explore the island of Aruba with their classic Aruba chicken, and then head to Brazil for dessert with a tasty Cassata de abacaxi (Pineapple cassata). Together your taste buds will explore unfamiliar spices and your woman will look at you in awe for the intense preparation and research you had to do to pull of this delicious meal.

Once dinner is done, set up an at-home wine tasting where you lay out different types of wines that you and your woman take turns trying. Be sure to look up the proper ways to taste wine so you can act as professionals! Then test each other’s wine tasting skills by allowing one another to identify which wine the other has tasted. Once you get a little saucy, then the nighttime fun can really begin!

Yet one of the most important aspects of V-Day is the gift you chose for your woman. Your lady wants something exclusive, something that shows you know her style and her taste. She doesn’t want you following the cookie-cutter guide to V-Day gift giving; what she wants is something unique that only she will possess. What she wants is the uber exclusive and fabulous Black Martini Eau de Toilette, which combines the elegance of Persian Musk with the youthfulness of Mandarin Orange.

With this soft, feminine scent of luxury that only few will call their own, your leading lady will be the topic of every ladies-night conversation. While the boys cowardly purchase the over-saturated use of Chanel’s Chance, or Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue, your beau will be rocking a limited yet enticingly rich scent. Black Martini is only available via the Surajo Bello website

WOMEN IN SUITS

Unfortunately you don’t see this enough:

A woman in a well-fitted suit is a treat. Women have a natural luxury of playing gender bender and making it look good. They can take something like the suit, which is historically identified as masculine, and make it look as if it was historically feminine. Paired with a killer pair of heels, a woman can make this a chic and sophisticated lady look. Just as men appear more distinguished, elegant, and classy with a suit, a woman can look just the same. Check out the ladies below and how they successfully own the suit look.

Shut down the Magazine presses!

If I were a magazine, book, or newspaper printer, Id definitely be concerned. The e-book reader has already got a huge following. It’s all about convenience and portability, how can you really argue that? So that being said, I’d like to introduce the Skiff Reader:

The Skiff Reader is the biggest e-book reader to date. Boosting an 11.5” screen and a .25” thickness. Full newspapers will be viewable, as well as magazines and books. On top of that its fully touch screen, wi-fi enabled and sprint will offer a wireless service, which will allow you to download books, newspaper and magazines on the goal. In my opinion the only better feature that makes it appealing more then my current Sony Reader is its touch screen function. What I’m really waiting for is the speculated Apple Touch Screen Tablet, and based on Apples track record, it will be a sleek looking device. It is rumored that the Apple Touch Screen Tablet will be geared toward content delivery, which means it will possibly function as an e-book reader, movie player, music player, and web browser. In any case these new gadgets will eventually make the printer and his press obsolete.

All men should own the suit: Literally and Figuratively

The Suit played a part in my transition into manhood. As a youngster, I disliked them. I felt uncomfortable wearing them. If you gave me a well fitted pair of jeans and shirt, I thought I was on top of the world. But as you mature your taste evolves, and you have a new found appreciation for things you used to dislike. There isn’t a man out there who puts on a well fitting suiting and doesn’t feel ontop of the world. Suits are to men what bags and shoes are to women. So with the dawn of a new decade, it is my personal belief that if you don’t already own a suit, this is the moment, the decade to experience such an empowering and authoritative uniform. Ideally 5-6 classic suits should be a staple in your overall wardrobe. Owning a suit literally is the easy part, owning a suit figuratively is we’re your personal taste should be manifested. Double breasted, single breasted, notched lapel, peek lapel, shawl collar, single vented, double vented, no vents, patch pockets, welt pockets, welt with flap pockets, or three piece. Specific combinations of these in certain fabrics will speak volumes of your character, so you must always be sure your execution of the suited look speaks of your character.

If you have a bohemian style don’t think for a minute you can’t pull of a suit. Just check out the guy below.

If you want an old school more classic look put on a double-breasted suit. Check out actor John Cho below. Notice how the suit makes his presence that much more distinguished.

IF you’re more of a color man, and think color best expresses your style and chracter then don’t be afraid to express yourself. Most men never allow themselves the pleasure of owning a suit in an exotic print, or color, don’t let other influence your decisions. Wear what you please just check out one of my favorite menswear designers Ozwald Boateng hanging out with his wife at a benefit dinner, sporting one of his own creations, an eye popping mustard sui. Below that, Spanish model Jon Kortajarena sports a vibrant true blue Tom Ford Suit, and below that a Surajo Bello pastel lilac suit jacket.

No matter what you end up choosing just make sure you execute your look exactly the way you want. That way you’ll be more confident thus adding the extra umph to your look. Check out quarterback Tom Brady.

Its 2010 time to SUIT UP FELLAS!
